Step Back in Time at the Killarney Heritage Centre
Nestled in the heart of Killarney, Queensland, the Killarney Heritage Centre offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s rich and resilient history. Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of old machinery, or simply curious about life in days gone by, there’s something here to captivate everyone.
One of the most striking stories on display is the tornado that swept through Killarney in November 1968, dramatically altering the town in a single afternoon. You’ll see incredible photographs, including one of a Southern Electric worker bravely restoring power on a damaged pole in the aftermath — a testament to the town’s enduring spirit.
Car lovers will be drawn to the beautifully preserved 1929 Chevrolet truck, a proud reminder of the vehicles that once traversed the rough country roads. Step into the past as you view vintage kitchen appliances that once made their way into the heart of every home, and marvel at a delicate wedding dress from the 1800s — a true piece of living history. Outside, you’ll find the magnificent real-life display of Bill and his bullock team. These working animals were once the backbone of the local logging industry, and the centre brings their story to life. Inside, displays show the daring feats — and occasional mishaps — of logging trucks, along with the powerful bullock trains that hauled massive trees through rugged terrain.
The centre also serves up some charming quirks, like an old-fashioned fruit cake recipe that intriguingly involves using a hairclip during baking — a delightful insight into the ingenuity of early cooks.
Of course, this is just a taste. Queen Mary Falls is a short drive away. Visit the Quern Mary Falls café, where you can feed the parrots while you enjoy a coffee and a delicious cake.
We had a wonderful stay at the charming Killarney View Cabins & Caravan Park. Its location just outside of town offers a lovely outlook. Upon our arrival, the owner kindly guided my husband to our caravan site, which was a nice touch. We received a map along with helpful tips about scenic drives and activities to enjoy. Additionally, it’s only a short stroll to town.
