Rochester offers an excellent RV stop conveniently located near the town, just across the road from the Silo Art. The town centre features everything you need, including a well-stocked IGA, coffee shops, a bakery, and a fantastic butcher that sells gluten-free sausages and lamb rissoles. The locals and shop staff are friendly and welcoming, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for everyone.
Rochester has some great Silo Art. The art is by Jimmy Dvate, a talented artist renowned for his vibrant works, who has travelled across nearly every state in Australia, leaving a unique mark wherever he goes. In addition to his captivating canvases, the town is adorned with a diverse array of artwork displayed on shop walls, including one from Steve Monk called ‘The morning after the B&S Ball’.
Just across the road from the railway station stands a striking statue of the renowned cyclist Otty. The figure captures the essence of Hubert Otterman, whose life story is nothing short of extraordinary. As you read through his remarkable achievements, you find yourself in awe of the incredible man he was. Otty accomplished so much during his lifetime, leaving a lasting impact that inspires many.
The town has a history of flooding, with significant events occurring in 1996, 2011, and the most devastating in 2022. These floods affected over 3,000 homes and resulted in the demolition of 100 homes. Flood markers can be found along the riverbank near Campaspe Park. Additionally, an impressive carving of a platypus in the park is definitely worth seeing.
