We found a spot to park our car and caravan just past the tourist information centre. We headed off to find a coffee shop and explore the town.
There is a heritage walk available, and the information centre offers a brochure to guide you during your walk. We strolled out to the Swinging Bridge and snapped some lovely photos.
The town has a bushranger history. Gold was the motive for bushrangers; they would hold up a gold escort in nearby Forbes and then hide out in Canowindra to evade police. In the present day, the town is now mainly a service centre for Lucerne, and more recently, it has also become a hub for viticulture and tourism.
We were looking forward to visiting the historical museum, especially the section on the age of the fishes. The museum featured displays of 360-million-year-old fossils from the Devonian period, when the area was a vast inland waterway. It was a great learning experience, and the slabs of fossils were amazing. The tourist centre also features a great gift shop, friendly and helpful staff, and lots of fun activities for kids.
