We woke up to a stunning sunrise at BarraCrab Caravan Park in Clairview. Arriving at high tide, we looked out at the aqua-blue water, dotted with numerous hazy islands on the horizon. We had booked a beachfront caravan spot, and the moon was in its first quarter of the waxing crescent phase, with high tides reaching 6 meters. At low tide, you can stroll along the beach; the tide goes out quite far, revealing rocky sand flats, before rushing back in at an enormous speed.
If you’re fortunate, you might see a dugong in the distance. A sanctuary for dugongs, also known as sea cows, is located between Camilla Creek and Clairview, so you may even spot one surfacing nearby. These fascinating creatures spend their entire lives at sea, grazing on seagrass.
In addition to the usual seagulls, the area is rich in birdlife. At night, you can hear the haunting calls of curlews and, occasionally, the sound of a train passing through the region. A colourful seaplane also flew low over the rocky sand flats, adding to the scenic beauty of the landscape.
The BarraCrab Caravan Park offers lunch and evening meals. Sticking with tradition, I ordered the Barramundi for dinner, served with chips and salad.
