The amazing collection of boulders known as the Devil’s Marbles was formed through erosion rather than just piling up rocks. These unique marbles are actually remnants of a larger granite formation that still sits below the surface. Isn’t nature fascinating?
Weathering and erosion over thousands of years will transform boulders into gravelly sand. Water filters into the margin of a boulder and reacts with some of the minerals, altering them to soft clays. The weathered outer layer then peels away along fine fracture lines. This is called onion-skin weathering or exfoliation.
