The moment arrived when our navigation systems indicated that we had reached the exact coordinates. The feeling was surreal as we stood at the meeting point of two of the Earth’s most fundamental lines. It was not just a geographical intersection; it symbolised our journey coming together at a point that held historical and navigational significance
In maritime folklore, crossing the equator is often accompanied by a ceremony to appease Neptune, the god of the sea. Following this tradition, we gathered on the deck to pay homage to Neptune and seek his favour for safe passage. A spirit of camaraderie filled the air as sailors, seasoned and novice alike, participated in the age-old ritual.
With Neptune appeased and our symbolic offerings made, we couldn’t resist the temptation to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters. The feeling of swimming at the point where the equator and prime meridian intersected was an experience beyond words. The cool embrace of the ocean served as a reminder of the vastness and beauty that the sea holds.
We crossed the equator with four other vessels, Cat Irie, Nauti Nauti, Reflections and Angel Wing
