Experiencing the stunning red sunrise each morning at the caravan park added a unique touch to our three-day stay. We stayed at the NRMA Port Macquarie Breakwall Caravan Park, which is conveniently located to access the waterfront break wall and beach. We had some very windy days and rain. The mornings were best before the wind kicked in.
Our morning walks were picturesque. The walk to Flagstaff Lookout provided ocean views and featured informative boards for you to explore as you stroll. If you have your bike, you may like to ride to Settlement Road Ferry Terminal, which is a better option if you are trying to avoid hills (there are plenty in Port Macquarie). Of course you need a coffee break on the way back, so we tried Banks Café near the Port Macquarie Sailing Club. There are some beautiful waterfront homes in this area.
We were fascinated by boating history, so we decided to visit the Maritime Museum. The museum consists of two separate cottages that were built initially as pilot cottages in 1896. It houses a collection of memorabilia and artifacts, including charts, maps, paintings, and historical maritime photographs. There are also impressive scale models of several vessels on display. We were captivated by discovering the names of the founding settlers from the first fleet. If you’re interested in your family history, it’s worth checking to see if your surname is among them! Additionally, the museum provides intriguing information about Australia’s occupation dating back to 100,000 B.C.
During our visit, we caught up with our friends John and Nancy. We decided to have fish and chips at The Beach House. For dessert, we satisfied our sweet tooth at Blue Cow Gelato. I had the gluten-free and dairy-free Black Hawaiian flavour, while Mark chose the mint flavour. We highly recommend trying Blue Cow. John and Nancy recommended it to us, as they had been there before.
Later in the evening, on a windy evening, we strolled to the town green park to capture a photo inside the Christmas bauble. Although we only had three days, there is so much more to see and do. Our December itinerary has a few ideas.
