Hoga/Kaledupa Wakatobi

Hoga is known for its diving and snorkelling, and we weren’t disappointed.  The best snorkelling is outside the Hoga Dive Resort; you can tie your dinghy to the black buoys.

Kaledupa, a Muslim village, is a short boat ride from the Hoga Dive Resort and anchorage. Villagers are welcoming and live in stilt houses linked by wooden walkways on the water

The village children love visitors, and their smiling faces are delightful. We met so many wonderful local village people as we walked around. The walkways have several missing boards, so you must watch where you are walking and remember to duck your head to miss the power lines.

Fishing and lobster are popular items for sale, also fruit and biscuits. They paddle out each day to the anchored boats.  One of the villagers makes swimming goggles out of wood. It was communicated to me that learning the ‘Koran’ could be more important than maths (religious prayer is integral to their lifestyle).

After snorkelling, you can enjoy an excellent, cheap meal at the resort; it’s a great atmosphere; dinner; and sundowners on the beach watching the sunset (they like you to ring and book so they know numbers).
