Located amidst breathtaking scenery, Brook Island National Park sits 136 kilometres northwest of Townsville and 30 kilometres northeast of Cardwell, accessible by boat with the added convenience of mooring buoys. We were intrigued by the island’s wartime past. In 1944, prisoners were said to have been subjected to a mustard gas experiment. This uninhabited island resembled others in the Southwest Pacific, where concerns loomed over the potential use of mustard gas by the enemy against Allied Forces engaged in action. It was important to understand the impact of mustard gas on troops and devise optimal strategies for their protection and response, which drove urgent research initiatives.
According to an account, in 1944, Squadron Leader Hampshire purportedly received instructions from Lieutenant Colonel Crowder involving the utilisation of 50 volunteers from US military prisons as test subjects for a mission. Allegedly promised freedom in exchange for occupying underground tunnels during a bombing operation, these prisoners were said to have been subjected to a mustard gas experiment, resulting in the demise of all 50 individuals. However, this narrative remains contested, with prominent Chemical Warfare researcher Geoff Plunkett asserting its inaccuracy. Additional corroboration for this account is lacking, leaving its veracity uncertain.
