When we rolled into Charters Towers, we couldn’t wait to see what this lovely little town had to offer! As we arrived, we drove past “The World,” a fantastic welcome sign that caught our eye. It’s a massive silver dome with an interesting backstory about the first gold nugget discovered in 1871 at Towers Hill.
During the gold rush, Charters Towers was filled with impressive structures known as Poppet Heads. These towered over the vertical mineshafts, giving access to the rich gold veins underground.
Aside from a fascinating history lesson, you don’t want to miss the stunning mosaic wall that tells the story of Charters Towers. It’s an impressive sight that adds to the town’s charm!
To kick things off, the following day, we couldn’t resist our favourite ritual of grabbing cake and coffee, so we made our way to the well-loved Salt Lane Cafe.
After enjoying delicious treats, we explored the town, eager to uncover its unique treasures. Charters Towers has vibrant street art, with colourful murals decorating the walls, each telling its own story and reflecting the town’s rich history and culture. As we wandered down the streets, we couldn’t help but admire the beautifully restored historic buildings lining the roads, their architecture giving us a glimpse into the region’s heritage.
We found our way into the Zara Clark Museum, a treasure trove of local history. Inside, we were greeted by a fascinating collection covering various aspects of the town’s past, including wartime artifacts, vintage cash registers, and everyday tools that offered a glimpse into life in earlier times. Among the more unusual exhibits were a birthing maternity chair and an iron lung, which sparked our curiosity and prompted discussions about medical advancements over the years.
You don’t want to miss Towers Hill! The view from the top of the Towers Hill lookout is tremendous, at 420 meters above sea level. It’s a fantastic spot to soak in the beautiful scenery while learning about the city’s vibrant history. As you explore, you can wander around the old mining shafts and WWII bunkers scattered throughout the area. It’s a great way to spend time outdoors and discover fascinating stories!
