We found a fantastic camping spot off the Barkly Highway. After being on the road for four hours and travelling 351 kilometres with long straight stretches, we decided to take a break. Using Wiki Camps, we found a Telstra Tower and decided to check it out. Thankfully, there was no traffic behind us as we approached, allowing us to slow down and look for the driveway.
The track was easy to navigate, although one corner was a bit tight. With some careful maneuvering, we managed to get around it. At first, the area didn’t seem like much, but we found a small clearing where we could reverse the van, making this our campsite for the night. Surrounded by spinifex grass and Holy Grevillea, and hundreds of flies, we enjoyed breathtaking views stretching for miles as the sun set, with our flynets on. We were genuinely deep in the outback. The flies were our only friends
The sunset was spectacular, with vibrant orange hues in the sky. Once the sun went down, we were treated to the sight of the Milky Way and a brightly shining Venus, along with the occasional shooting star. It was an incredibly clear night. The only sound we heard was the distant rumble of a road train passing through.
In the morning, we are awake to the sound of birds. It’s hard to believe there’s so much bird life out here. The attraction was the Holy Graville, which was out in flower.
